Description

Tour in Callao Fortress of Real Felipe is a military building style Vauban built in the eighteenth century in the bay of Callao, during the governments of the viceroys José Antonio Manso de Velasco and Manuel de Amat and Junyent to defend the port against pirate attacks and corsarios.Es one of the few works of military architecture that exist in Peru and is the largest built by the Spanish in America. It was known during the colonial era, together with the strong “San Rafael” and “San Miguel” as the “Castles of Callao.” Its name was chosen in honor of King Philip V of the House of Bourbon, who had died in 1746. It was later renamed by Jose de San Martin as “Castillo de la Independencia” to the beginning of the republican era, reprising his original name in 1925,
