Itinerary
Day 1
Upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, the Capital of Biodiversity of Peru, we will welcome you at the airport. We will then begin our program with a
bus tour of the city. Afterwards, we will head to the Capitanía Port, where
our boat will be waiting to take us on a journey along the Bajo Madre de
Dios River (the Serpentine River), until we reach our lodge, located thirty
kilometers from the city of Puerto Maldonado. Along the way, you will observe rural farms dedicated to agricultural and
livestock activities near the city. If weather conditions allow, you may also
spot colorful plants such as giant-flowered heliconias, and perhaps encounter
wildlife such as capybaras, caimans, river turtles, herons, cormorants, carrion
birds, and birds of prey. Upon arrival at our lodge, you will be greeted with a delicious nectar made
from tropical Amazonian fruits and escorted to your comfortable bungalow,
specially reserved for you. Once settled in, a hearty lunch will be waiting for
you in our cozy, rustic-style dining room.
Caiman Lake
In the afternoon, our specialized guide will lead you along a well-marked
interpretive trail to Cocha Caimán, a small lagoon where you will have the
chance to observe the black caiman and the white caiman—skilled predators
at the top of the food chain—that thrive on the lagoon’s abundant aquatic
fauna, represented by various fish species. Upon returning to the lodge, a delicious dinner will be waiting for you,
followed by free time to share unforgettable moments at our bar, equipped
with an excellent game room and stocked with every beverage you could
imagine. As night falls, the nocturnal wildlife will lull you to sleep with the
melody of countless songs and calls from a variety of birds.
Day 2
The birds of paradise will sing to awaken you refreshed. A hearty breakfast
will provide you with the energy needed for a morning full of new experiences.
Lost Cocha
After breakfast, we will embark on an adventure through the virgin jungle,
accompanied by our local guide. We will take a hike into the deep forest,
following the well-maintained trails of our interpretive circuit. Along the way, we will cross temporary waterways, known as caños, over sturdy bridges, and
witness the widest variety of wild flora and fauna in their natural state. We
will also discover a great diversity of ornamental plants of incomparable
beauty.
On the way to the Lost Cocha, we will identify species of fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal trees that sustain animal populations in the Amazon forests. With some luck, we may spot larger mammals such as the jaguar (otorongo),
tapir, and peccary; rodents such as the giant otter, capybara, agouti, and
armadillo; primates such as the howler monkey and the monk saki; reptiles
such as the iguana and the fer-de-lance; amphibians such as the toad; and
birds such as the guan, partridge, golden parakeet, and the scarlet, blue, and
yellow macaw.
The rivers create wetland systems, lakes, oxbow lakes, and meanders, such as
the spectacular Lost Cocha. Wetlands play an essential ecological role, as they
represent a crucial biological hub with endemic species and serve as refuges for
mammals. These aguajales (swamp palm forests) make up seventy percent of
the area that Eco Amazonía Lodge protects and restores.
The aguaje palm holds great importance for Amazonian ethnic groups. It is
considered a plant of mystery—the mother of the forest or the tree of life. The
aguajal is home to its vigilant guardians: the jaguar, regarded as the son of the
aguajal; the anaconda, the largest snake in the world; the owl, watching
everything from its lofty perch, bringing relief to all ailments; and the black
caiman, the stern guardian that punishes anyone who dares to fell the female
aguaje palms. Once at the Lost Cocha, we will climb to a large observation platform. From
this lookout point, you will appreciate the vast surface of this magical place
and observe two types of aguajales: dense and mixed. We will then take a
pleasant walk around the Lost Cocha, and, if luck is on our side, you may spot
the giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the largest of its kind and one of the
most impressive animals in the Amazon. Back at the lodge, you will enjoy a delicious lunch.
Day 3
After a refreshing night’s sleep, the powerful calls of the howler monkey will
greet you in the morning, reminding you that you are still in the heart of its
domain. In our dining room, a delicious breakfast will await you before
beginning the return journey to Puerto Maldonado.
